Projects

Part of the work we carry out at World Obesity is in the form of projects, which we either lead or collaborate on with other parties.  These often have a specific theme and may be globally or regionally focused.

Current Projects:

Recent projects include looking at Childhood Obesity in the EU, strengthening health systems globally and bringing together professional bodies to look at robust evidence to support obesity focused advocacy.

MAPPS II

MAPPS II is a global initiative led by the World Obesity Federation between 2025 and 2027. Building on the first MAPPS project, which identified major gaps in obesity services across health systems, MAPPS II is generating updated evidence on obesity prevention, treatment and care, with a focus on health system capacity, policy action, and inequities in care pathways.

INFORMAS

INFORMAS is a global network of public-interest organisations and researchers that aims to monitor and support public and private sector actions to create healthy food environments and reduce obesity and non-communicable diseases (NCDs).

Healthy Venues

Healthy Venues works association with the World Obesity Federation. It is a transparent accreditation covering workplace health, healthy catering and promoting activity. It is part of a global effort to promote both human health and the health of the planet.

Lancet Commission on Obesity

The Lancet Commission on Obesity is a joint venture between World Obesity, Auckland University, George Washington University and The Lancet. It aims to stimulate action and strengthen accountability for tackling obesity and related inequalities, and to build new understanding of the systems driving obesity in order to reorient them.

COHD

The COHD project is a three-year study in aim to establish the causal pathways that link childhood obesity to human capital development and social outcomes, with a focus on educational attainment, labour market outcomes and social participation.

OBTAINS

The OBTAINS project aims to improve the training and skills levels of health professionals and to strengthen the evidence base and improve the dissemination of evidence for policies and interventions to address obesity.

FINCH

This research project will look at how tax on food and drinks can be changed to make healthier foods and drinks less expensive, helping to reduce the risk of obesity and long-lasting diseases. We will work with the public, the government, food companies and shops to understand how changes in the way food is taxed will impact everyone.

OBCT

OBCT provides health professionals, researchers, policy makers and the public with knowledge, maps and tools to support sustainable prevention of obesity, with a particular focus on low socioeconomic position (SEP) communities.

Past EU Projects:

EU projects have included those looking at determinants, prevention strategies and health risks of obesity, making key policy recommendations for these.

STOP

The STOP project - Science and Technology in Childhood Obesity Policy - came to an end on 30 November 2022, after 4.5 years. The project brought together 24 international research and advocacy organisations to generate evidence on the factors that have contributed to the spread of childhood obesity in Europe, and on the effects of alternative policy options available to address the problem.

CO-CREATE

The CO-CREATE project – Confronting Obesity: Co-creating policy with youth (2018-2023) – set out to tackle childhood and adolescent obesity and its co-morbidities by working with young people to develop tools and practices to strengthen their role in policy development.

The HOPE Project

The HOPE project - Health promotion through Obesity Prevention in Europe - represents a three-year examination of the determinants of obesity that began in September 2006, culminating in a series of scenarios and policy recommendations.

The Energy Project

The overall aim of the ENERGY project - EuropeaN Energy balance Research to prevent excessive weight Gain among Youth - was the development of a new theory and evidence-based multi-component intervention scheme to be implemented across Europe, promoting the adoption or continuation of health behaviours that contribute to a healthy energy balance.

The DYNAMO-HIA Project - DYNAmic MOdeling for Health Impact Assessment - set out to develop and build an instrument to quantify the health impact of policies influencing health determinants.

The ToyBox Project

The ToyBox project intended to prevent early childhood obesity using a holistic, evidence-based approach that focuses on behavioural models to understand and promote fun, healthy food, play and policy.

The DAPHNE Project

DAPHNE was an EU-funded study to develop and test methods for collecting, analysing and exploiting personal activity and fitness information, with a focus on reducing sedentary behaviour.

The Spotlight Project

The SPOTLIGHT project 2012-2016 investigated a number of questions concerning obesity prevention and multilevel interventions to prevent obesity and promote better health behaviour among adult populations.
