MAPPS II Roundtable in Brazil
Jun 11, 2026Brazil is at a critical moment in its response to obesity. Prevalence has more than doubled since 2006, with over one in four adults now living with obesity.
High BMI is now the leading health risk factor in the country - surpassing high blood pressure - and the economic and human cost continues to grow.
Brazil has also shown real leadership: internationally recognised dietary guidelines, a national childhood obesity strategy, mandatory front-of-package nutrition labelling, and a universal public health system that reaches the vast majority of its population.
The challenge now is translating that policy ambition into coordinated, equitable action on the ground.
As part of the MAPPS II initiative, the World Obesity Federation is convening a national roundtable in Brasília to examine how obesity is being addressed across Brazil's health system and wider sectors, share emerging findings from the MAPPS II Brazil survey, and develop actionable recommendations aligned with Universal Health Coverage goals.
MAPPS IIThe roundtable will bring together stakeholders from government, research, civil society, UN agencies, healthcare, and people with lived experience of obesity - representing the breadth of perspectives needed to drive meaningful change.
Findings will inform the national MAPPS II report on Brazil and contribute to global advocacy ahead of the 2027 UN High-Level Meeting on Universal Health Coverage.
