SCOPE's Core Learning Path contains the essential information on obesity management.

World Obesity Federation - SCOPE

The Core Learning Path is an evidence-based eight-module course that provides healthcare professionals the skills and knowledge to manage patients with obesity. It covers all the essentials of obesity management, including the causes of obesity, complications, how to raise the issue of obesity with patients, how to take a history and conduct an examination, how to achieve weight loss and how to address obesity in children and adolescents.

Users wishing to become SCOPE Certified are required to take this essential course, which can be purchased via the SCOPE E-Learning platform.

The Core Learning Path is accredited by the EACCME® and the CPD Certification Service. Learners who pass the course will earn 4 CME credits, 4 CPD credits and 4 SCOPE points.

Modules

The Core Learning Path contains the following modules, all authored by leading obesity experts:

Obesity and the Regulation of Body Weight

In this module, Dr Sumithran gives an overview of body weight regulation and outlines compensatory physiological changes which accompany weight loss, many of which appear to encourage weight regain.

Causes of Obesity

This module by Prof. Proietto discusses the causes of obesity and the factors that can influence body weight, citing powerful evidence of obesity’s genetic basis and the relative importance of other causes.

Complications of Obesity

Dr Kushner reviews the comorbidities associated with obesity, taking an organ-based approach. It describes the identification process, including history taking, physical examination, and laboratory and diagnostic evaluation.

Starting the Patient Dialogue

In this video module, Dr Sharma demonstrates how to lead patients with obesity to healthy outcomes and how to raise the issue of obesity sensitively, using a clinical scenario to show correct and incorrect approaches.

Management of Obesity in Adults

Prof. Proietto provides a detailed description of management of obesity in adults,  including how to stage the patient to assess risk of mortality, how to calculate energy expenditure, and long term weight loss strategies.

History Taking and Examination

This module by Prof. Proietto discusses the important questions to ask a patient presenting for weight loss and details the key features to observe when conducting the physical examination.

Pharmacotherapy for Obesity

In this module, Dr Jastreboff discusses the principles of prescribing medications as adjuncts to lifestyle intervention to achieve and sustain weight loss. It discusses the efficacy, safety and tolerability profiles of anti-obesity medications approved by the FDA or EMA, including the recently-approved drug semaglutide.

Management of Obesity in Children and Adolescents

This module by Prof. Baur covers child obesity assessment, the risks and complications of obesity in children, parental involvement, pharmacotherapy and severe obesity, presenting evidence for the different elements of lifestyle interventions.
