World Obesity welcomes new President and new President-Elect

On 13 July 2022 at World Obesity Federation's Annual General Meeting, we were thrilled to welcome Prof. Louise Baur as our new President, and Dr Simón Barquera as our new President-Elect. 

Louise and Simón bring decades of experience and expertise to their respective roles and have exciting plans for the future of World Obesity as we continue to drive and support global obesity-related targets.

President: Prof. Louise Baur

Louise has worked in many clinical, public health and policy aspects of paediatric obesity and nutrition.

She has made extensive research contributions to the prevention of obesity, especially in early childhood; the impact of food marketing to children; the antecedents of obesity and the metabolic syndrome in young people; the complications of obesity; the management of obesity and related disorders in a variety of clinical settings; and the measurement of body composition, dietary intake and physical activity in young people.

In 2010, Louise was made a Member of the Order of Australia (AM) for service to medicine and to the community.

President-Elect: Dr Simón Barquera

Simón Barquera is an MD with MS and PhD degrees in Nutrition Epidemiology. As of May 2017, he is the Director of the Nutrition and Health Research Center in Mexico’s National Institute of Public Health, where he also leads the Obesity, Diabetes and Cardiovascular Disease research line (since 2015).

He is co-investigator of the Mexican Health and Nutrition Surveys (1999-2020), Member of the Ministry of Health Chronic Diseases advisory board, the PAHO Expert Group on sodium reduction, co-chair of the World Obesity Federation Policy and Prevention Committee, and fellow of the Obesity Society.

We extend our warmest welcome to Louise and Simón and look forward to building on our work with stakeholders to drive global efforts to reduce, prevent and treat obesity.
