World Obesity Federation - SCOPE

25 June 2024

The World Obesity Federation is pleased to be hosting a SCOPE School in São Paulo, Brazil, this June.

The prevalence of obesity has been steadily increasing worldwide and has emerged as a major public health concern in Brazil over the past two decades. With approximately 20% of Brazil's population affected by obesity, the country faces significant health and economic challenges.

Ahead of ICO 2024, we will be welcoming world experts to share and discuss the most up to date evidence in obesity science. In addition, sessions will be held on the global obesity policy landscape and implications for policy in Brazil and the wider Latin America region, allowing participants to develop skills in obesity advocacy.

This SCOPE School will represent an opportunity for both clinical and public health professionals, as well as people with lived experience and journalists, to increase their knowledge of obesity, interact with their peers, and share challenges and success stories.

Participants will receive 4 points towards SCOPE Certification.

By the end of the School, you will:

  • Be aware of the health consequences of obesity.
  • Understand the challenges associated with long-term weight maintenance and factors influencing sustained outcomes.
  • Be able to identify the benefits and opportunities of addressing obesity in primary care.
  • Be able to discuss the role of health professionals as health systems advocates and the potential to affect policy change.
  • Have an improved understanding of the importance of a multistakeholder approach, including media, and patients with lived experience.

Target Audience

Primary healthcare professionals working in clinical practice, including primary care medical practitioners, nurses, pharmacists, dietitians, psychologists, surgeons specialising in metabolic and bariatric surgery, researchers, public health professionals, policymakers, media professionals, journalists, advocates and people with lived experience.
