Statement to the 75th World Health Assembly
Agenda item 14.1 Follow-up to the political declaration of the third high-level meeting of the General Assembly on the prevention and control of noncommunicable diseases
Grouping 1.1.2
(i) Draft recommendations for the prevention and management of obesity over the lifecourse, including potential targets

World Obesity welcomes the WHO Recommendations on obesity which, for the first time, are comprehensive: covering obesity prevention, management and treatment throughout the life-course. reporting.

We commend WHO’s commitment to support selected frontrunner countries with implementation, through the Acceleration Plan, and the newly added commitment for biannual reporting. However, we remain concerned by the limited targets and lack of accountability and implementation support, especially for non-frontrunner countries, risking continued inaction and failure to meet targets. An overarching framework, e.g. Global Action Plan, is the next step required to support implementation and accountability, reduce fragmentation and ensure no-one is left behind.

We urge Member States to:

  1. Adopt the Recommendations on obesity and commit to implementation
  2. Request strong accountability and reporting to support comprehensive action in all countries

We also support WCRF-International’s statement on the same agenda item.
