World Obesity Federation’s official relations status with WHO renewed

NewsWorld Obesity Federation’s official relations status with WHO renewed

The World Obesity Federation’s official relations status with the World Health Organization (WHO) has been renewed following the 158th session of the WHO Executive Board in February 2026.

The decision recognises World Obesity’s continued contribution to WHO’s work and reaffirms a long-standing collaboration spanning more than two decades. As part of the triennial review process, Member States commended the organisation’s ongoing support to global health priorities and approved the continuation of its official relations status.

World Obesity remains the only obesity-focused organisation in official relations with WHO, reflecting its unique role in advancing the global obesity agenda and supporting coordinated action across prevention, treatment and policy.

Strengthening collaboration for the years ahead

The renewal provides a framework for continued collaboration between World Obesity and WHO, with implementation of joint activities to be reviewed again in 2029 under the standard triennial schedule.

Through this partnership, World Obesity will continue to work closely with WHO to support global and national efforts on obesity, including contributing to policy development, strengthening capacity among healthcare professionals, and advancing implementation of evidence-based approaches to prevention and care.

The collaboration also spans engagement across WHO departments and regional offices, as well as joint efforts through broader initiatives such as the Global Obesity Coalition.

Supporting global action on obesity

The renewal comes at a critical time for global health. Obesity continues to rise worldwide and is a major driver of non-communicable diseases (NCDs), placing increasing pressure on health systems and economies.

Through its official relations status, World Obesity plays a key role in supporting WHO’s mission to promote health, keep the world safe and serve the vulnerable - including by contributing technical expertise, engaging civil society, and helping to translate global recommendations into action.

The continued partnership will support progress on key priorities, including strengthening health systems, improving access to care, and advancing integrated approaches to obesity prevention and management.

Looking ahead

As WHO and its partners accelerate efforts to address obesity globally, the renewed official relations status ensures that World Obesity remains a central partner in driving forward coordinated, evidence-based action.

By continuing to work alongside WHO, governments and stakeholders worldwide, World Obesity will help advance solutions that address obesity as a complex, chronic disease and support healthier futures for all.
