The module 'Obesity and Pregnancy' is now available to access via the new SCOPE E-Learning platform. The module has been rewritten with brand new content by Dr Sarah Price, an expert in pregnancy and obesity based in Melbourne, Australia. 

'Obesity and Pregnancy' discusses the impact of obesity on the female reproductive cycle, covering the effects of obesity on fertility, conception and assisted reproduction. The module also examines the influence of obesity on the pregnant mother, including health risks, delivery complications and maternal mortality, and explores the effects of maternal obesity on the foetus and child. It concludes by presenting three case presentations to highlight some of the key issues surrounding obesity and pregnancy, including a discussion on pregnancy after bariatric surgery.

Dr Sarah Price (MBBS (H1), FRACP, PhD, DipRANZCOG, DCH, Cert Ob Med) graduated from Monash University medical school with first class honours. She completed her clinical training in adult endocrinology at Austin Health and Melbourne Health. She received her PhD from the University of Melbourne. Her PhD thesis titled ‘Health consequences for mother and baby of substantial preconception weight loss in women with obesity’ was supervised by Professor Joe Proietto.

Dr Price was supported by an NHMRC post graduate scholarship and Norman Beischer Medical Research Foundation Grant. Sarah is the current chair of the Australasian Diabetes in Pregnancy Society (ADIPS). She has clinical appointments as an adult endocrinologist and obstetric physician with Melbourne Health, Royal Women’s Hospital and Mercy Hospital for Women.

Dr Price is also a clinical tutor with Melbourne Medical School. She has an honorary senior lecturer position with the University of Melbourne and is passionate about improving pregnancy outcomes for women living with metabolic disease.
