Established in 2015 by the World Obesity Federation, World Obesity Day is an annual campaign that aims to stimulate and support practical actions that will help people achieve and maintain a healthy weight and reverse the global obesity crisis.
In 2018, #WorldObesityDay called for an end to weight discrimination to improve the life chances of people with obesity around the world.
We raised awareness about the prevalence, severity and diversity of weight stigma, with the media identified as one of the main perpetrators. Media portrayals of obesity often reinforce inaccurate and negative stereotypes about weight which can lead to weight stigma. The 2018 campaign was a call for action to end the use of stigmatising language and imagery and instead portray obesity in a fair, accurate and informative manner.
