Doctor Themistoklis Tzotzas

Themistoklis Tzotzas is Endocrinologist graduated from the Medical School of Aristotelian University of Thessaloniki in 1982. He trained in Internal Medicine and Endocrinology, as well as Diabetes and Metabolism in the department of Endocrinology and Metabolism under Pr JL de Gennes at Pitié-Salpêtrière Hospital in Paris between 1982 and 1988. His specialist discipline is in lipid disorders and obesity. During 1988 he worked as Chef de Clinique at the Pitié-Salpêtrière Hospital. In 1989 he returned to Greece and received his qualification in Endocrinology-Metabolism. Since 1990, he has worked as an Endocrinologist-attending physician in the department of Endocrinology- Diabetes-Metabolism in Panagia General Hospital in Thessaloniki, Greece. His PhD thesis was on ‘The influence of lipid transfer proteins on the modulation of HDL in obese women during weight loss’ (Department of Biocemistry - Thessaloniki Medical School).

Themistoklis Tzotzas was the cofounder and scientific director of ‘The Medical Institute for the study and treatment of Obesity’, a medical centre in Thessaloniki treating obesity on a multidisciplinary basis, from 1991 to 1996. He has been the main participant in five Greek research studies related to prevalence and prevention of obesity in children and adults and the coordinator of school educational programs on ‘Nutrition and Obesity’ . Furthermore, he is the author of the Greek guidelines on ‘Obesity in Adults’ published in 1999 and ‘Childhood obesity’ published in 2001 and 2005. He is a leading member of several international medical societies and a past member of the council of Hellenic Medical Association for Obesity (1997-1999: General Secretary, 1999-2001: Vice-president, 2003-2005 and 2005-2007: Member, 2007-2009: Associate Member).

Themistoklis Tzotzas has participated in organizing committees of national and international congresses on obesity. He was nominated as a European Fellow of the Specialist Certification of Obesity Professionals in Europe (SCOPE) in 2004. He is currently director in the Department of Endocrinology-Diabetes-Metabolism in Agios Pavlos-Panagia General Hospital in Thessaloniki, Greece. Themistoklis Tzotzas is the author of 35 peer review published papers, mainly related to obesity, lipids and metabolic co-morbities and prevalence. He is a reviewer in several peer review medical journals principally in the obesity field.
