The Action Plan focuses on priority action areas and interventions for the next 10 years in order to achieve regional and global targets to reduce premature mortality, reduce the disease burden, improve the quality of life and make healthy life expectancy more equitable. It has two overarching objectives:
- To take integrated action on risk factors and their underlying determinants across sectors
- To strengthen health systems for improved prevention and control of non-communicable diseases
The priority action areas of the Action Plan include governance; surveillance, monitoring and evaluation, and research; prevention and health promotion; and health systems. Regarding priority interventions, the Plan highlights promoting healthy consumption via fiscal and marketing policies as a population-level intervention.
