Tackling NCDs: “Best buys” and other recommended interventions in the prevention and control of non-communicable diseases
This document provides policymakers with a list of ‘best buys’ and other recommended interventions to address non-communicable diseases. A list of options is presented for each of the four key risk factors for non-communicable diseases (tobacco, harmful use of alcohol, unhealthy diet and physical inactivity) and for four disease areas (cardiovascular disease, diabetes, cancer and chronic respiratory disease). Renamed “Best buys” and other recommended interventions, it comprises a total of 88 interventions, including overarching/enabling policy actions, the most cost effective interventions, and other recommended interventions.
Regarding the reduction of unhealthy diets, recommended interventions include reducing sugar consumption through effective taxation on sugar-sweetened beverages. This is identified as an effective intervention with cost-effectiveness analysis>1$100 per Disability Adjusted Life Year averted in low- and middle-income countries.
