THE BENEFITS OF LOW AND MODEST WEIGHT LOSS
Excess bodyweight is a known risk factor for a wide range of chronic diseases and disease indicators. Long-term weight loss is associated with a lowered likelihood of disease and a reduction of disease indicators. Treatment of obesity with bariatric surgery is generally considered to have health benefits, but the impact on health of less invasive forms of intervention, and of interventions in less extreme forms of overweight, remain poorly examined.
World Obesity is currently undertaking a project to assess the effects of low and modest weight loss on long-term health outcomes, particularly cardiovascular risk factors and disease, diabetes and mortality.
This project is supported by an unrestricted grant from Novo Nordisk.
