Harnessing the Beneficial Properties of Adipogenic Microbes for Improving Human Health

Multiple different microbes, including gut microflora, viruses, scrapie agents and parasites, are reported  to increase adiposity in various animal models through individual actions or through their interactions. The gut microbiome is now recognized to have significant impacts upon the development of a number of diseases including obesity, type 2 diabetes and the Metabolic Syndrome. This conference will discuss the evidence from human and animal studies on the mechanisms through which the gut microbiome and certain virus influence organ specific metabolism through their effects on immune and infammatory processes to impair or improve health.

The goals of the conference will be to provide an in depth insight into the current state of knowledge on microbial effects in regulating metabolic processes and energy balance, to identify novel reserach directions and the future challenges in translating this knowledge into clinically applicable therapeutic strategies.

This 2012 Stock conference will bring together 12 prominent scientists who have made major contributions to our knowledge of the effects of virus and the gut microbiome on health and disease. This will be the 10th of the Stock Conferences, all of which have provided a unique environment for a select group of scientists and discussants to focus on a specific topic related to obesity and its comorbidities.
